A View From The Bridge

Chelsea ace discloses the reason why Reece James did not take penalty vs Newcastle

Chelsea’s Jorginho discloses the reason why he didn’t leave the penalty kick for Reece James vs Newcastle

According to ESPN (h/t Metro), Chelsea star Jorginho didn’t leave the penalty kick for Reece James against Newcastle because he didn’t ask for it. Had he done so, Jorginho would let him take it.

It was a Reece James show at St. James’ Park as Chelsea scored three past Newcastle United and strengthened their grip on the top spot of the Premier League table. The Chelsea right-back scored a brace taking his goal tally to four for this season. He has shown extraordinary goal-scoring abilities this season, advancing and moving high on the pitch.

Reece James could have completed a hat-trick if he took the penalty instead of Jorginho.

James scored his first goal in the 65th minute, and 12 minutes later, he doubled it. Then in the 80th minute, Kai Havertz was fouled inside the opponent’s penalty box that allowed Chelsea to take a penalty kick.

Though Reece James had a great chance to earn the first hat-trick of his career, Chelsea’s usual penalty-taker Jorginho took the penalty. In the post-match interview, he was asked about not giving away the penalty to his teammate; he said the English player didn’t ask him for it.

“If he had asked, we would have had a conversation, but he didn’t.”

Jorginho is Chelsea’s usual penalty taker.

But just after the referee awarded the penalty, Jorginho had a chat with James. He later disclosed that the 21 years old full-back wanted to support him, and that’s why he came to him for a motivational chat.

“He came over to support me.”

Jorginho too praised Reece after the match praising the ability of Reece’ to score with both feet. Still just 21, James’s potential is terrifying and exciting in equal measure.

“He’s amazing with both feet, so he opened the game for us, and it was great; it was a beautiful goal.”

Ben Chilwell also scored three goals this season for the Blues.

After the German manager, Thomas Tuchel, took over the charge earlier this year, the attacking quality of the Chelsea full-backs has improved. Both full-backs came on the scoresheet in one week as Ben Chilwell scored a goal against Norwich last Saturday.
