According to Daily Mail (h/t Football.london), Chelsea can spend £241m in the winter transfer window while remaining inside the financial fair play restrictions.
The UEFA fair play regulations were invented to stop teams from ‘spending beyond their means.’ This rule also restricts the Premier League teams, and they can only spend to a specific limit to comply with regulations.
Academic Kieran Maguire devised a report that shows the exact amount Premier League teams can spend in the coming winter transfer window.
Chelsea has the fourth-biggest financial fair play allowance in the following window. The Blues can spend £241m while remaining within the restrictions.
It seems Tottenham have the most significant limit with £400m. Liverpool can spend inside £273m followed by Manchester United who can spend £243m. Arsenal and Manchester City can spend £201m and £84m respectively. London rivals West Ham, meanwhile, have a limit of just £35m.
The middle of the season is a hectic time to sign players. Not only is the transfer window shorter than the one in the summer, but teams are also dead in the middle of a season with their own hopes and ambitions. But this season, some obligations can change that.
The Blues board face massive difficulty with the contract situation of two of the central defenders. German player Antonio Rüdiger and Danish player Andreas Christensen are yet to pen down a new contract despite closing to the end of their term at Chelsea. In such a case, it would make sense for the Blues board to go out and plan for the future in the worst-case scenario.
Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner both were sidelined following fitness issues recently. Such an injury crisis could expose any potential holes in Chelsea’s squad depth so signing an attacker would also make sense in that regard.
That being said, it is up to the club when it comes to how they will spend their money. The best we as fans can hope for is for us to retain our top players and make shrewd additions where necessary.
