Talking to the Athletic (h/t The Metro), former Chelsea left-back Graeme Le Saux has compared first-team star Antonio Rudiger to club legend John Terry.

Rudiger was out of favour at Chelsea when Frank Lampard was in charge of The Blued but since the appointment of Thomas Tuchel has seen him emerge as a key first-team player. The German international played a key role in Chelsea’s Champions League win last season.

The 28-year-old has carried over that form into the current season and is amongst the lynchpins at the back for Chelsea. A strong rearguard has been the driving force behind Tuchel’s success at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are currently top of the Premier League table and have conceded just three goals thanks to some solid defending by Rudiger and Co. Le Saux for one is sold on Rudiger’s on-field presence and domination.

“Rudiger is in his prime, someone who is so energetic and angry all the time — a good angry”

The ability to make himself appear larger than life on the pitch is something Le Saux associates with John Terry. The Chelsea legend was one of the finest defenders in the world and being compared to him is no mean feat.

“JT was like that. He’d dominate opponents. When he went on the pitch, it was as if he got bigger, taller, wider.”

Despite Rudiger’s superb performances – Chelsea are yet to agree to a new contract with the defender. If no agreement is reached between the two parties up to January 1, 2022 – Rudiger will be free to sign pre-term contract with the foreign clubs.

The 28-years-old however has not yet given up on his time at Stamford Bridge. He admitted to Guardian last week that he is happy at the club. Whether it will eventually translate into him penning an extension remains to be seen.
