In conversation with Astro Supersport (h/t The Sun), former Frank Lampard assistant coach Jody Morris said that he was baffled by the timing of the substitution made by the Blues boss Thomas Tuchel during Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United.
The Blues were held to a draw by the Red Devils at Stamford Bridge despite dominating the game. North London club needed a penalty in the 69th minute to earn a point.
The draw reduced the Blues’ lead at the top of the table to just one. Manchester City and Liverpool are now within touching distance.
“I just felt that with the amount of dominance Chelsea had they weren’t creating enough real good chances. The fact you have the level of the bench that Chelsea had, there was no reason why at least two of them could (not) have been brought on a lot earlier.”
Analysing the match Morris said that Tuchel should have made substitutions earlier as they failed to create enough chances from open play. Chelsea to their credit did fashion numerous opportunities. However, poor finishing and an inspired David de Gea proved to be massive hurdles.
“From a fan’s perspective, I would definitely have liked a couple if not all three changes at the top end of the pitch a lot earlier. It’s always easier to say after the game but we were slightly surprised that Tuchel didn’t make changes earlier.”
Tuchel brought in Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic in the 78th minute but the duo did not have enough time to make any influence in the game. The same goes with Lukaku, who came in for Timo Werner in the 82nd minute but failed to make any impact.
Although he made a couple of decent runs but never troubled the United’s defenders or goalie David de Gea.
Tuchel has more often than not got his tactical decisions right in big games. To suggest he got it wrong against Man United would be wrong. After all his side certainly would have won handsomely had it not been for a lack of cutting edge in the final third.
Chelsea next face Watford on Wednesday before taking on a tricky West Ham United at the weekend. Both the games are away from home but Tuchel will be hoping to regain their momentum in the title race with back to back wins.
