“I am selfish”- Didier Drogba urges African goal machine to re-sign for Chelsea

Didier Drogba urges Mohamed Salah to return to Chelsea amidst contract issues at Liverpool

Speaking to Al-Axis TV (h/t Liverpool Echo), Didier Drogba has told Mohamed Salah to sign for Chelsea amidst his contract situation at Liverpool.

The Egyptian has arguably been the best player in the Premier League since signing for Liverpool in 2017. His goals have helped the Anfield outfit win the Champions League, and not to mention, their first Premier League title.

However, he could be heading for the exit door in the future as his contract is set to expire in 2023. The Reds could make him their highest-paid player in their history unless he decides to leave them.

Chelsea legend Drogba has now urged his former teammate to join the Blues again if he chooses to snub a new contract at Liverpool.

“If I am selfish, I will tell Salah to leave Liverpool and return to Chelsea. My opinion is that Salah will remain the best, no matter if he continues at Liverpool or if he moves.

“I do not know what his decision would be. This is his decision alone and his future. Wherever he goes, I will be one of his fans.”

The club icon shared the pitch with Salah for the first half of the 2014/15 season before the high-flying winger joined Fiorentina on a loan move.

Exciting but unrealistic

There hasn’t been anything solid to indicate that Chelsea would be interested in signing the former Basel winger, or that the player would himself be open to returning to Stamford Bridge. He is currently flourishing at Liverpool while the Blues, who won the UEFA Champions League in May and are leading the Premier League table right now, have solid depth in attack themselves.

To add to this, the player told Norwegian channel TV2 (h/t Sky Sports) of his desire to stay at Anfield and by the time the 2023/24 season begins, he would have turned 31. That is not to say that he wouldn’t be a top player then, but that he wouldn’t really be a long-term investment for any potential suitor by that time.

More Chelsea News

Chelsea would surely be a better team with the 29-year-old within their attacking roster. After all, who wouldn’t want a goal-machine like him in their team? But any talks of him returning to Stamford Bridge should be taken with a pinch of salt.
