“Very vital”- Rival PL manager lavishes praise on 20-year-old Chelsea loanee

Norwich boss Dean Smith showers praise on Chelsea loanee Billy Gilmour

According to the Independent, Norwich City boss Dean Smith has showered praises on the Chelsea loanee, Billy Gilmour, following his performance in the 2-1 win against Southampton in the Premier League. The Scottish international had not featured for about two months coming into this game.

The midfielder had joined the Canaries on a season-long loan deal and, expectations were for him to earn some valuable minutes. He was involved in the early matches before being sidelined by the previous Norwich manager, Daniel Farke, in the final weeks of his stint.

Smith was selected to replace Farke and help the newly-promoted club survive the relegation battle. And he wasted no time in depending on the services of the loanee, a decision that turned out to be successful. The 20-year-old helped his team to valuable three points after setting up the winner through a corner.

Smith has made it clear that he values Gilmour and that the youngster has a role to play in Norwich staving off relegation. The performance against the Saints was if anything a trailer of things to come.

“Billy will be very vital to staying up. When you have a player of that talent on loan, you want to get the best out of him. We want to utilise the strengths he has and he was part of a good team performance in the second half.”

The Canaries coach believes Gilmour showed everyone just what he is capable of in the second half against Southampton. His performance will not have come as a surprise to Chelsea fans well aware of his prowess.

“He showed pockets of what he could do in the first half but we had to see another side to him because we didn’t have an awful lot of the ball, but I think he showed everybody what he can do.”

Dean Smith was impressed by Billy Gilmour.

This new development would be delightful to the Blues as the entire point of the loan was to ensure the player receives regular game time. Moving forward, they would hope that the Scotland midfielder would follow in the path of Conor Gallagher, another loanee who has been sensational at Crystal Palace.
