A View From The Bridge

Boost for Chelsea as senior star refuses to join La Liga giants

Transfer News: Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen refuses to join FC Barcelona

According to Fabrizio Romano (h/t Football.London), Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has rejected the chance to join FC Barcelona as a free agent in the following summer window.

The Danish international has been the centre of attraction in recent times due to his renewal dilemma with Chelsea. The Danish player’s contract is about to end the following summer, and he would have the option to leave Stamford Bridge for free.

Despite his contract nearing its end, he hasn’t signed a new contract, and it seems a rigorous negotiation session has been taking place between his agent and the Blues board. As of yet, they are yet to reach a consensus.

Having suffered a significant financial shock, FC Barcelona have lost the power to spend big money on players. In such a scenario, they are eyeing the signing of Andreas Christensen as a free agent. But the 25-year-old has rejected the offer and is instead focussed on his Chelsea future.

It is believed that the Chelsea board and the Danish centre-back are on the verge of reaching an agreement, and both parties see his future at Stamford Bridge.

Christensen has been one of the biggest reasons for Chelsea’s recent success. His partnership with German defender Antonio Rüdiger has formed the core of a rather stingy Chelsea backline under Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has rejected any chance to feature for Barcelona.

This season Chelsea has conceded only four goals in the English top flight. Even though Edouard Mendy has a big part in that success, he wouldn’t have been such secure without the help of his centre back duo.

Christensen has been reasonably consistent and flourished under Thomas Tuchel. It would be difficult for the board to find an equally strong replacement for the defender. So the extension would be for the greater good of both parties.

Hopefully the much-awaited contract extension is right around the corner and there will be good news on that front sooner rather than later.
