According to Bild (h/t Football.London), Premier League leaders Chelsea have suffered a setback in their hopes of landing German centre-back Niklas Sule as German champions Bayern Munich have offered him a new deal to stay at the club.
The 26-year-old’s contract with German champions expires next summer but they have now offered him a new deal to stay at Allianz Arena.
The Blues are in the market for a defender as there are question marks over the futures of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta. All of them will be free agents come next summer and will be free to sign a pre-agreement with foreign clubs once the transfer window opens in January.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are in talks with their current set of defenders to sign a new deal as they have been an integral part of Thomas Tuchel‘s success at Chelsea. The Blues defence is currently one of the strongest in the Premier League, having conceded just four goals from 12 matches in the ongoing season.
Tuchel also revealed earlier this week that the club is optimistic regarding the deals of Rudiger and Christensen. He told reporters:
“I’m very sure Toni feels how respected and what kind of an important role he plays in this club. I’m calm because Toni is calm, and the situation inside is calm. Everyone is mature. I’m happy he plays how he plays because we need him on this kind of level.”
“For Andreas, everybody wants the same thing. Hopefully and obviously I expect some good news in the next few days. The situations are handled professionally from all sides, very calmly. During the process we can produce the performances we need, and that’s the most important thing.”
Chelsea’s first preference should surely be to tie their current stars to a new deal as they have been very important cogs for our success in the Champions League last season.
This season as well they have shown immense composure at the back which has helped Chelsea to the top of the table in the current season. And with the news that signing Sule is all the more difficult now, it is important that Thomas Tuchel and co set the framework for Chelsea’s future backline, otherwise, they can be caught in a bit of a pickle after next summer.
