Speaking in his pre-match press conference (h/t football.london), Thomas Tuchel explained Chelsea are still title hunters despite being top of the table going into their game against Manchester United.
Tuchel led us to a Top 4 finish last season and has had a terrific start to the current campaign. The Blues have only conceded 4 league goals so far, a formidable record considering the quality of opposition they have faced. The attack has also pounded in the goals, with only Liverpool ahead of us in the league’s scoring charts.
There is still quite a long way to go in the season. Factors such as injuries to key players can always derail the campaign completely. Thus, Tuchel has kept his feet on the ground and reiterated that his side are title hunters despite having a 3-point lead at the top of the table.
He told reporters in the press conference ahead of the game against Manchester United (h/t football.london):
“It is a marathon, it is not finished. We started this race as the hunters, and before the race is finished, we will be the hunters. If we can stay the whole race ahead of those competing for the win, this is what we work and dream for.
“There is still a long way to go, and the road does not shift. Man City and Liverpool showed us what is needed to be consistently at the highest level, and we need to do it.”
The German boss has been around the block for a while and has encountered success as well as hardships. He is the only PSG manager to lead the club to a UCL final, but also the only one to have lost one.
Chelsea finished in the Top 4 last season after Tottenham beat Leicester on the final day. The Blues lost their game against Aston Villa and were fortunate enough that the Foxes suffered a similar fate. Hence, Tuchel understands that one must not count their chickens before they hatch.
We have come a long way since then, but the road ahead is still a pretty long one. Thus, little can be ruled out until we are mathematically uncatchable. We have the squad and the manager to achieve our goals, but the performances need to follow if the Blues wish to lift their first league title in five years.
While Manchester United may not be a title contender for us right now, they have the tools to cause damage when we face them this weekend. Manchester City and Liverpool are also showing little signs of slowing down, and thus, we cannot get complacent and take the foot off the pedal so early in the season.
