“Good news”- Tuchel delivers verdict on the contract situation surrounding Chelsea defensive duo

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel delivers verdict on the contract situation of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen

Speaking in the pre-match presser (h/t Metro), Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has given his thoughts on the contract situation of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. He was speaking ahead of the match against Leicester City in the Premier League.

The defensive duo will see their contract with the Blues end in the summer of 2022. They will also be able to legally engage with other clubs to reach a pre-contract agreement from January. Should that happen, it would be a big blow to Tuchel, who has rebuilt the Blues on the backbone of a strong defence.

The German coach turned Rudiger from being cast aside to one of the best defenders in the league. Whereas Christensen was considered error-prone, he has become a commanding presence at the back alongside the German international.

The 48-year-old coach admitted that there have been delays with the negotiations but was adamant that there is no bad blood between the parties. He mentioned how in football, things do not always go the way you desire them to happen.

“It is pretty clear what we want but it is not like this in football when the coach or club wants something and things happen. Things are mature, respectful and clear. Of course, there are some delays with Toni and Andreas.”

Tuchel also goes on to add that he expects some good news in the days to come. This situation continues to be handled with care by all parties involved.

“Also with Andreas from my point of view, everybody wants the same thing. Hopefully and obviously I expect some good news in the next days but every case is different. The situations are handled from all sides very carefully.”

It is interesting to note that the Blues manager is more confident with the 25-year-old, and it seems like a common ground is agreed between both sides. The 28-year-old is asking for a salary of £200,000 per week and, these demands seem higher than what the board wants.

The situation surrounding the Danish defender is a sigh of relief, but Rudiger’s case should also be dealt with as soon as possible.
