Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Thomas Tuchel claimed that Chelsea were brave in their 1-1 draw against Manchester United.
The Blues picked up a point against a lacklustre Man United side at Stamford Bridge. The performance lacked an oomph on the night, and it reeked of failure to be prolific in front of goal.
We had countless corners but failed to capitalize on any of them. Timo Werner ran all night long but to no avail. Callum Hudson-Odoi was a hit and miss, while Hakim Ziyech had fleeting moments of brilliance.
Jorginho was at fault for us conceding but also redeemed himself after scoring the penalty. Tuchel claimed after the game that the side was courageous on the night, and he is happy despite the draw. He told Sky Sports:
“I was happy to coach the team. I saw a huge effort, we had so many ball recoveries and put the pressure high. We were brave and courageous, but they defended deep, and then you need the first goal.
“If you don’t score, you always run a bit behind because you feel you are the stronger team. You play in the opponents half so we have two or three big chances we should have maybe used..”
It is understandable to pick up a draw against Liverpool, especially when we are down to 10 men. The defeat to Man City was criticized, but they are arguably the best team in Europe. We lacked several players in the draw to Burnley three weeks ago.
However, there is no justification for the result against Man United. They had benched Cristiano Ronaldo and had Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw unavailable for selection. Moreover, they have been dreadful this season.
If we cannot defeat such sides, we can stop thinking about lifting the title in May. The Premier League winners always convert draws into victories, and we are suffering the same issues as we did during the beginning of Tuchel’s tenure.
Every point counts in this rip-roaring title challenge, and the German boss shall need to get the men firing again and hope that this draw does not come to bite them back in the future. As for the game against United, the Red Devils defending so deep throughout the game was perhaps an ode to the threat we have now become and how we really are one of the top dogs, if not the top dog, in the title race.
