Speaking on Reach PLC’s Transfer Window Podcast, as quoted by The Express, journalist Ian McGarry claimed that Chelsea have made a breakthrough in getting Andreas Christensen to sign a new contract.
The Blues backline is currently filled with a lot of uncertainty. Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, and Andreas Christensen will be out of contract next summer as things stand.
There is an urgent need to amend this situation. Especially since they have been the bedrock for the success Thomas Tuchel has gained in the past year. And it looks like the West London club has started the process of retaining the quartet.
Journalist Ian McGarry recently revealed that the club has made a breakthrough in contract negotiations with Christensen.
“But Christensen is now seen as a starting centre-back, one who Tuchel certainly rates and wants to retain.
“It’s our information that a breakthrough has been made in contract negotiations with Christensen and his representatives and that a deal to make sure that he signs an extension to his contract has effectively been verbally agreed, which of course would be good news for Chelsea, good news for Tuchel, good news for Christensen as well.”
It is no surprise that the Blues have acted swiftly to the situation. The January transfer window is around the corner, and the 25-year-old would have been eligible to enter into pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs.
McGarry also mentioned that it is a great deal for the club, given the exorbitant fees shelled out for defenders in recent times, especially the ones at the top of their game. There is no arguing that as the Danish international has showcased his potential in the past 10 months.
He might have suffered for game-time in recent weeks, but the academy graduate played some of his best football in the latter half of last season. If our fixture schedule is any evidence, Christensen shall have to turn the afterburners in the coming months.
However, this update cannot be accepted as a confirmation. Chelsea would need to release an official announcement, hopefully before the end of 2021. It would put a lot of uncertainty to bed and put some belief in the minds of fans that Marina Granovskaia is working hard behind-the-scenes to secure the future of the club.
The Dane is in the prime years of his career and having lost Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi in the summer to AC Milan and Crystal Palace respectively, the need to future proof our backline is now even more evident.
