According to Eurosport, Ben Chilwell has shown his appreciation towards Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel for helping to overcome one of his worst periods in football. He was forced to quarantine during Euro 2020 as he had been in contact with Billy Gilmour, who tested positive for Covid-19.
The 24-yer-old joined the Blues on a five year deal from Leicester City in 2020 for a fee of £45m. He has made 54 appearances and has seven goals and assists each across all competitions following the move.
However, he did not play a single minute for England in their Euro campaign and has not featured under Tuchel up until October. The former Leicester City star also missed the September Qualifiers for the 2022 Qatar World Cup as a result.
“The way I try to look at it, I was disappointed that I wasn’t playing in such a massive competition in England. I was so eager to get back playing football, it was maybe coming across that I wanted it a bit too much.”
Chilwell admitted he was disappointed due to the missed opportunity to play for his country. He also self-reflected and said he might have been trying too hard to make up for the lost time. And as a result, it may have negatively affected him.
Me and the manager at Chelsea had a very honest conversation where he did say to me ‘You know, I feel like mentally at the moment your’re just, in training, you’re pushing a bit too much to try and get back in the team-We love you here, we know the qualities you possess just relax a little bit, you’re going to get back in’.”
It is great to see how the German boss was able to identify the internal struggles that the left-back was going through. This also shines a light on his man-management abilities and how he can understand his players.
The West London club are in safe hands, and the relationship between the squad and the coach could create cohesion and harmony. This would greatly help as they battle it out in multiple competitions throughout the season and with an able left-back like Chilwell, the Blues need not worry about that flank for at least the next few years.
