Marcus Bettinelli hails Chelsea duo Eduard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Marcus Bettinelli revealed that he is in awe of his Chelsea teammates Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga. The goalkeeper joined the Blues last summer from Fulham after being with the west London rivals since 2010.
Mendy has been a revelation for Chelsea and is seen as one of the best goalkeepers in the world today. The Senegal international joined the Blues from Rennes on a five-year deal last summer. The £22m paid for his services appears to be a bargain now.
Meanwhile, the Spanish international Kepa, the most expensive goalkeeper in history has had to take a supporting role. The Spaniard has had his ups and downs and is now slowly making his worth count when called upon.
It is fair to say that the goalkeeping department that looked to be a soft spot in the past is today a bastion of strength under Thomas Tuchel. Bettinelli certainly thinks so and believes the two players ahead of him in the pecking order are among the best in the business.
“As a No 1 and No 2, I don’t think there is any better in the Premier League. You have David de Gea and Dean Henderson at Manchester United, but I believe Mendy and Kepa are better than them.”
A solid defence has proven to be the backbone of the Blues resurgence under Tuchel. Having a dependable last line of defence is certainly a boost for any side keen to win the biggest trophies in the game.
Bettinelli has one of the toughest jobs in his hand to take over the duo at the club but despite the competition, he appears to be in awe of his rivals.
While the 29-year-old may not be in the same league, he does offer the Blues goalkeeping department strength in depth. A regular for Middeslobotugh (on loan) lasts season, game time has been harder to come by at the Bridge.
