Player News: Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen set to extend his contract amdist uncertainty
According to Football Insider (h/t Football.London), Chelsea have made a breakthrough in negotiations as Andreas Christensen is close to agreeing on a contract extension amidst the uncertainty that has been building up over months.
Christensen has been one of the talking points recently in the Blues fanbase as many were concerned about his future at Stamford Bridge. Talks over a new deal have been in action for quite some time, and the lack of progress made many worry about the situation.
The Danish international’s current contract expires in 2022, meaning he will become a free agent at the end of the season. With the breakthrough, that could change since he is close to reaching an agreement with Marina Granovskaia and co.
The centre-back has played in 13 matches this season and has scored one goal in the process. He has been crucial in the backline as his displays have helped the team top the Premier League this season. We also have the best defence in the league, having conceded just four goals so far.
The point of contention between him and the club was over agent and wage issues. With the new development, the club can focus its attention on other pressing matters like the contract renewals of Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger. The trio is otherwise in line to become free agents at the end of the season.
When the 25-year-old officially signs the contract, we can have a sigh of relief as the uncertainty surrounding our defence’s future was building day by day. Once this is sorted, it must be our priority to tie down some of our other first-team defenders.
Solving these uncertainties can go a long way as it would ensure that Thomas Tuchel would not need to restructure the system that is working well currently. The Dane, along with his teammates at the back, has been crucial in delivering success under Tuchel up until now and has several years of football still left in him.

Azpilicueta, Rudiger and Silva are not getting any younger. It is important to have a good mix of players from all age groups so that the present and the future remains as stable as it can be. Christensen certainly falls in the category of a player that can play a role in Chelsea’s future as well, along with someone like Trevoh Chalobah.
Hopefully, an announcement from the club regarding the Denmark star’s contract renewal isn’t far away. It would be much better for the club if they can focus on bringing in new players during the transfer windows rather than worrying about the contract status of their current personnel.
