“There is nothing”- Chelsea defender opens up on his soon to expire contract

Andreas Christensen gives his opinion on the ongoing contract situation at Chelsea

Speaking to Danish outlet BT (h/t The Athletic), Andreas Christensen has said that he is not worried about his contract situation at Chelsea. His current deal will expire in the summer of 2022, and the club remains keen to tie him down to a new one.

The 25-year-old is a mainstay for the three-man back system under Thomas Tuchel and has rightfully earned his spot at the club. He has contributed to an impressive ten clean sheets alongside a goal from 13 appearances this season in all competitions.

Losing such a key player would be a concerning moment for the club, and it is in our best interests to resolve the matter. However, Christensen believes that the negotiations do not define his relationship with the Blues as he is happy with the club.

“I do not know why everyone thinks it is a bad situation. I’m still happy and I enjoy playing football.”

The Danish centre-back added that there is no bad blood between him and the club, and things are going smoothly. He also mentioned how he is hoping that that the contract talks would reach a common ground as quickly as possible.

“Yes (Chelsea will have an interest in securing their player), but on the other hand, they also have a player who right now enjoys playing football and the coach shows him confidence. There is no bad relationship, there is nothing.”

Last month, it was stated that the defender wanted to stay at Stamford Bridge, but the financial terms of the new offer were a hurdle. Negotiations for renewal have also not made any progress since the start of the 2021-22 season.

The supporters would be worried about the growing uncertainty surrounding the future of the Danish international. Reaching an agreement must be a priority as it may cause unrest within the squad which is harmful during the season.
