Timo Werner had a mixed debut season with Chelsea
According to German publication Bild (h/t ESPN), Newcastle United could plot a move for Chelsea ace Timo Werner and have been in contact with his agent already.
The 25-year-old joined the West London outfit for €53million last summer after an incredible season under Julian Nagelsmann at RB Leipzig. Although he looked the real deal in the beginning, goals dried up for the German forward, and not a lot changed even after fellow countryman Thomas Tuchel was appointed.
However, Werner’s desire to perform well in every game and his tireless work rate allowed him to play a crucial role in helping the Blues lift their second-ever UEFA Champions League trophy.
The striker, however, suffered from a lack of game-time at the start of the current season as summer signing Romelu Lukaku hogged a majority of the minutes. Although he started in the UEFA Super Cup final and in the season opener against Crystal Palace, his next start came against Aston Villa in the League Cup.
Werner scored a good goal and has since picked up some form as he also found the back of the net against Southampton before the international break. However, clubs are now circling to lure him out of Stamford Bridge.
Newcastle United, who were recently acquired by a Saudi-backed Public Investment fund, have a lot of money to spend, especially since they are backed by owners who are believed to have a worth of over £320billion.
Moreover, they have also apparently been in contact with Werner’s agency, as he shares one with Newcastle ace Fabian Schar. However, given that the Magpies are not in the Champions League currently, the German international might not be intrigued to join them.
In fact, Tuchel might also not want to lose his star striker, especially now that he is starting to find his feet again.
