A View From The Bridge

Transfer News: Out-of-favour Chelsea midfielder on Burnley’s radar for January move

Transfer News: Burnley plotting January move for Chelsea outcast Ross Barkley

According to The Sun (h/t The Metro), English Premier League side, Burnley are plotting a move for Chelsea star Ross Barkley in the upcoming January transfer window.

The 27-year-old joined the club from Everton in 2018 and has since made 89 appearances for the Blues. While he has never quite established himself as a first-team regular, Barkley played a key role in the club’s Europa League win in 2019.

He never quite enjoyed the same success under Frank Lampard and was shipped off to Aston Villa on loan last season. The stint in the Midlands proved to be a mixed bag and he returned to the Bridge earlier this year.

Barkley has made just three substitute appearances under Tuchel and is far from a major player at the club. With game time difficult to come by, the 27-year-old could be made available on loan in the winter transfer window.

This is good news for Burnley who are struggling in the 19th spot in the Premier League after eight games. The Clarets were keen on Barkley in the summer and could be set to revive their interest in the new year.

Sean Dyche’s side is winless so far and have lost five games already. Unless results pick up soon, they would find themselves mired in the relegation dogfight.

A major reason for Burnley’s struggles is their inability to score goals. The Clarets have managed to find the back of the net just five times, a tally that puts them only ahead of Norwich in the goals scored charts.

Barkley is on his day a dynamic presence in midfield and is well capable of making dartings runs upfield. His addition could very reinvigorate the Blarets attack that looks toothless. More so the 27-year-old could ve at the receiving end of regular playtime at Turf Moor.

Moving to another side in the same league is a tactic that worked out for Jesse Lingard last season. There is no reason why Barkley too can’t rekindle his game by doing the same.

At 27, Barkley can yet salvage his career. Once a very promising young player, he has failed to meet expectations and has fallen by the wayside. While he may never become a world-beater, all may not be lost just yet.
