According to the club’s official site, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has lavished praise on the Blues’ goalkeeping department.
A solid defence has proven to be the hallmark of the German’s reign at Stamford Bridge. Critical in it has been the shot-stopper. Edouard Mendy has proven himself to be a dependable last line of defence.
Tuchel admits that the goalkeeping department was one that caught his eye early on at the club. Having joined midway through the 2020/21 campaign, the German was thrust right into the mix.
“I found a fantastic group, a competitive group, a strong group of goalkeepers, goalkeeper coaches and Petr Cech, who helped each other through every single training session.”
Tuchel is glad to have two international goalkeepers at the club. Mendy might be the first choice right now but in Kepa Arrizabalaga and then Marcus Bettinelli, the Blues have options available behind the Senegalese.
“I’m absolutely happy we have two international top goalkeepers.”
The Blues boss goes on to credit the club and also veteran goalkeeper and now current technical and performance advisor Petr Cech for building a solid goalkeeping department. The Czech star was a star in his day and knows what makes a solid goalkeeper.
“Credit goes to the club and to Petr Cech, who saw the possibilities and potential in these guys.”
The win over Brentford saw Chelsea go back to the top of the Premier League table. Despite being at the top of the table, Tuchel does not appear to take the club’s position for granted. He is well aware of what Liverpool and Manchester City are capable of.
“Liverpool and Man City have proven in the last years they are the benchmark in terms of quality and consistency.”
Having the right goalkeeper between the sticks makes a major difference to a club’s fortunes. As long as Chelsea continue to get the results, there is little doubt that Mendy and co will take centre stage numerous times.
