According to The Express, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is less than thrilled with the performance of his makeshift centre back duo Trevor Chalobah and Malang Sarr following the hard-earned win over Brentford.
The Blues endured a difficult night that saw the home side launch wave upon wave of attack at them. An inspired performance by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy ensured Tuchel’s men came away with all three points.
With Thiago Silva unavailable and Antonio Rudiger out injured, Tuchel was forced to pair Chalobah and Sarr in defence. While the duo managed to see out the game, their performance did not inspire much confidence.
Speaking after the game, Tuchel admits that Rudiger and Silva’s experience would have been welcome on the night. However, since they were unavailable, the Blues had to make do with what they had.
“It helps if we have Toni [Rudiger] or Thiago [Silva] with the experience to stay calm and win decisive challenges to escape the pressure and maybe create counter-attacks but we don’t want to talk about guys who aren’t here.”
The 48-year-old however admits that being thrown in at the deep end is a learning curve in itself. Chelsea’s young defensive duo would have learnt much by playing the match and now have room to grow.
“If you don’t play, you can’t get experience and they did very very good.”
Tuchel believes the duo could do even better and plans to have a word with them. This is all the more needed given the pressure they had to endure in the final 20 minutes of the game.
“In the last 20 minutes we need to talk on how they can do better – there are always opportunities to improve.”
Of the two, it was Sarr who struggled more. It is to be expected given his lack of experience in a Blue jersey. A promising player, much will be expected of him in the future.
“For Malang it was a bit more difficult. He was with us for two weeks and we had a feeling for him.”
While it was not smooth sailing, Chelsea got the job done and that is all that matters. Chalobah and Sarr will certainly learn from their experiences and grow as footballers and men. For now, they can celebrate a job well done.
