Thomas Tuchel heaps praise on Chelsea star Kepa Arrizabalaga for his performance against Southampton
According to Evening Standard, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has applauded Kepa Arrizabalaga for his solid display in their penalty shootout win against Southampton in the Carabao Cup.
Kepa played a major role as the Blues beat the Saints in a 4-3 scoreline in the penalty shootout as both teams scored one each in regular time. The keeper had recently lost his starting spot to Edouard Mendy but continues to impress when he gets an opportunity to play.
The Spaniard was signed for a fee of £72m as he became the most expensive goalkeeper in football history. However, he has not lived up to the transfer fee and is now playing second fiddle to Mendy.
Kepa’s confidence and demeanour during the penalty shootout unsettled two Southampton penalty takers. The Spaniard deserves due credit for his role in Chelsea’s win on the night.
“He produces and is also full of confidence. He has good experiences with us but we have to do it again and again. Kepa was a big part of this.”
The 27-year-old saved a spot-kick from Theo Walcott and then stood his ground to Will Smallbone, who then went on to miss the penalty kick. Earlier, the keeper showed similar heroics in the previous round as well as in the UEFA Super Cup.
“Just because you won a penalty shoot-out does not mean you do it again. Full credit and it is a special thing in football and he was again very concentrated and calm.
