Speaking in an interview (h/t Evening Standard), Tammy Abraham claimed that he was frustrated during the last few months of his Chelsea career and that joining AS Roma has proved to be the right decision.
Abraham came through the club’s academy and impressed heavily under Frank Lampard. His position came under threat last summer when the Blues acquired Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.
Despite that, Abraham still managed decent playing time and was scoring at a decent rate under the English manager. But things changed under Thomas Tuchel.
The former PSG and Borussia Dortmund boss took over earlier this year and since then, Abraham’s lack of game-time was clear for all to see. The English striker has now claimed that the lack of minutes made him consider a move away from Stamford Bridge.
“I realised that I needed go out and prove myself. I took a decision and it was the right one. At first it’s quite tough to deal with. You’ve gone from playing regularly to not being in the mix and not even making the bench sometimes. I got to a point where I had to sit down and talk to myself.”
Tuchel’s starting XIs rarely ever featured Abraham and it got to a point where the 23-year-old striker was not even in the matchday squads for the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League finals.
The club signing Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan also spoke a lot about Tuchel’s trust in Abraham, and a move to AS Roma has paid off for the Chelsea academy graduate so far. Speaking about his decision to move to Rome, Abraham revealed the role Mourinho played in his transfer.
“I picked up the phone and he (Mourinho) was like, ‘Do you want to enjoy some sun or stay in the rain?. I have learned so much tactically – as much as I have in my entire lifetime. It is good. You need to learn off different managers. Right now, I am learning a lot.”
It’s good to see Abraham flourish elsewhere and with Lukaku doing a decent job since his big return to London, it seems like this transfer was a win-win for all parties involved.
