“Ridiculous”- La Liga club chief clarifies 22-year-old Chelsea target with £68.5m release clause will not come cheap

Sevilla president Jose Castro dismissed claims suggesting Jules Kounde transfer is necessary for financial reasons

Speaking to Spanish media AS (h/t The Sun), Sevilla chief Jose Castro is adamant that selling Jules Kounde is not necessary to help them with finances. The president spoke against rumours that suggested they need to sell the Frenchman to help them financially.

The centre-back was close to joining Chelsea in the summer but the clubs were not able to reach a deal. It is said that the Blues offered a sum of £43million for the services of the French defender.

However, the La Liga club rejected the bid as they were holding out for a much bigger offer which is stated to be around £60million. With a £68.5 million release clause in his contract, the Spanish club is unlikely to let him leave unless they receive an offer that satisfies them.

“To say that the club is broke is ridiculous. Last season we had a surplus, after a season without season tickets, without ticket sales. The deficit would have been resolved by selling Kounde and we showed that we are economically powerful and we will not accept €50million.”

The 22-year-old is also subjected to interest from various clubs including the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United. His ability to play as a right-back is an added incentive that would increase the amount of interest.

Thomas Tuchel’s side is expected to be back for the French national in the coming transfer windows. They will need to match the valuation and fight off competition from other heavyweights if they are to succeed.

With Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva nearing the latter end of their careers and with the uncertainty surrounding Antonio Rudiger’s contract renewal, the English club would be wise to sign the Sevilla defender. Should they decide to buy him, they may need to put real effort in to pull the deal off.
