As one of the biggest clubs in the world, European Champions Chelsea have some of the finest football players in the world who are equally vital for their international teams.
A number of them will be in action in the coming days. As confirmed by the club’s official site, we take a look at who will be up to what- which player makes the cut for the Nations League and who features in the World Cup qualifiers.
Star striker Romelu Lukaku will be in action for Belgium as they take on World Cup winners France in the UEFA Nations League semifinals. A win will take them closer to a maiden international trophy. Another Blues star Michy Batshuayi (on loan at Besiktas) will also feature for the Belgians. N’Golo Kante, however, misses out on the France squad after testing positive for COVID.
Chelsea will also be represented in the other semifinal between Italy and Spain. Both Jorgino and Emerson Palmieri (On loan at Lyon) were part of the Azzurri side that won the Euro 2020 title earlier this summer. It remains to be seen if they will help Italy to a second major international title.
Jorginho can also aid his own bid to win this year’s Ballon d’Or will be handed a significant boost if he impresses in the semifinal and hopefully the final.
The Italian duo will come up against two familiar names in the Spain squad. Both Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso have been included in the La Roja squad.
Armando Broja has been chosen to represent Albania as they continue their World Cup qualification in a behind-closed-doors game against Hungary on Saturday before the Eagles host Poland on Tuesday.
Thiago Silva has been called up for Brazil’s three World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela, Colombia and Uruguay. Mateo Kovacic meanwhile is part of the Croatian squad that will travel to Cyprus and Slovakia.
Andreas Christensen is in the Danish squad that heads to Moldova on Saturday and hosts Austria on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell have been included in the England squad to face Hungary at Wembley. Former Chelsea Academy graduates Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham are also included.
The trio of Antonio Rudiger, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz all retain their places in the Germany squad for qualifiers at home to Romania and away in North Macedonia on Monday.
Another on-loan player, Baba Rahman will join up with the Ghana squad for their twin qualifiers against Zimbabwe. It is also a proud moment for Academy starlet Sami Tlemcani who received his first senior call up for Morocco.
Billy Gilmour who is also out on loan is currently in the Scotland squad for the twin qualifiers coming up at home to Israel on Saturday and away to Faroe Islands on Tuesday.
Fans would be wishing for the Chelsea stars to succeed in their international endeavours and return home safely, unscathed and without injuries. With a long season still ahead, the last thing we need is injury troubles, that too when the players are away from club duty.
