Former Chelsea star Olivier Giroud aims a dig at Frank Lampard in Thomas Tuchel comparison
According to TribalDootball (h/t The Express), former Chelsea star Olivier Giroud has given his verdict on former managers Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel.
Lampard started the 2020/21 season at the helm at the Bridge. However, he was relieved of duties after a dip in form midway through the season and was replaced by Tuchel. The German not only steadied the ship but led the club to the UEFA Champions League title.
The impact Tuchel has had at the club is not lost on Giroud. He believes the 48-year-old has brought back the mojo associated with success to Stamford Bridge, something that may have been lost under Lampard’s leadership.
“Tuchel brought serenity and confidence to the team again by being successful.”
Giroud goes on to add that Tuchel’s plans fit perfectly with the squad at Chelsea. While plans are well and good, results obviously help. Tuchel turning around the club’s fortunes certainly helped his case.
“It is always easier when you win games so we built that confidence step by step, and with the philosophy of his game playing a 3-4-3, with the great players we had, his ideas fit perfectly to the team.”
The Blues ended the season strongly, planting the seeds for what has become a title challenge this season. As European champions, we will also feature in the FIFA Club World Cup.
“I think we finished strong and solid, and in the end we qualified fourth and won the Champions League so what more can you say.”
Lampard is a legend at the club but as a player. While he has promise as a manager, the Blues job came too soon for his shoes.
Hindsight has proved that hiring Tuchel was the right decision. The German has once again made us a fearsome force in Europe and it remains to be seen what he goes on to achieve.
