Paulo Di Canio labels Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku ‘dull’ in Victor Osimhen comparison
According to Sky Calcio Club show (h/t The Daily Star), former Italian ace Paulo Di Canio has launched an astonishing attack on Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgian international endured a difficult time last week at Brentford. He saw a first-half strike chalked off and was taken off with 13 minutes remaining. Given that Brentford were the side on the initiative, Thomas Tuchel’s decision made sense.
Signed for a club-record £97.5million in the summer, Lukaku scored thrice in his first two games upon his return to Stamford Bridge. He has failed to remain consistent and has failed to score in his last six games.
One man who is less than impressed by the 28-year-old’s struggle is Di Canio. He has gone on to claim that Victor Osimhen and Lukaku should not be compared because the latter is a ‘dull‘ player who is not suited to perform in every system.
“I heard (Giuseppe) Bergomi comparing (Napoli striker Victor) Osimhen and Lukaku. But Osimhen has a different spirit, he’s not dull like him. When the difficulty increased he scored no goals in five games with Chelsea.”
Di Canio goes on to absolve Chelsea of any blame for Lukaku’s struggles. He believes the fact that the Blues are still top showcases their ability in spite of the Belgian’s troubles.
“It’s not Chelsea’s fault, they are first (in the Premier League table) even without his goals.”
Lukaku was a beast at Inter Milan and helped the club to their first Scudetto in a decade last season. While he can still come good at Chelsea, his ability to fit the system rather than have it tailored for him is suspect. It is a fact that Di Canio was only too happy to put out.
“Lukaku is functional to a certain type of game.”
Tuchel however does not appear to be concerned about his striker’s form. He revealed after the game that his decision to take the Belgian off was fatigue. Hopefully, the striker will come good and repay the faith put in him.
