According to Cadena SER (h/t ESPN), Chelsea star Marcos Alonso has revealed that he is targetting a return to La Liga before he retires from the game.

The Spanish ace has enjoyed a new lease of life this season and has found opportunities easier to come by. He has made nine appearances this season, scoring one goal and assist apiece.

Alonso is currently ahead of Ben Chilwell in the Blues pecking order. The Englishman however scored last time around and it remains to be seen if it will change the pecking order in the club.

Alonso came through the ranks at Real Madrid, going on to make just one appearance for the Los Blancos. It remains his lone appearance in the Spanish top flight. He however is keen to add to that tally and has admitted a return to his homeland is in his plans.

“I’m very happy there [in London] but before retiring, I would like to have the opportunity to play in La Liga.”

Alonso for his part does not appear to call it quits at the Bridge immediately. He appears to be happy at Chelsea and sees his immediate future at the club.

“It’s not something that I feel is urgent. I’m very well playing in a big club and fighting for great titles. I have two years left on my contract and we will see what happens in the future.”

Alonso has overtaken Chilwell in the Chelsea pecking order.

He moved to Bolton Wanderers in 2010 and then enjoyed spells at Sunderland and Fiorentina before joining Chelsea in 2016. He has since made 175 appearances for the club, scoring 25 goals and 18 assists across all competitions.

Alonso’s deal at the Bridge runs until 2023 and at the age of 30 is nearing the latter end of his career. Whether he will see it out or will seek a move elsewhere before that remains to be seen.

An attacking tour de force, the 30-year-old Spaniard is brilliant going forward. He does, however, get caught out at times at the back and will need to work on his defensive nous. However credit where it is due, he has done well to take the starting left-back spot for himself this season.
