Chelsea midfielder Jorginho explains why he picked Kevin de Bruyne for the Ballon d’Or.
Chelsea star Jorginho made his pick for the Ballon d’Or, and it’s not Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski or Mohamed Salah. According to ESPN Brasil (h/t Metro), He decided to vote for Manchester City superstar and former Blues ace Kevin de Bruyne.
The midfielder is a front runner for the award this season after winning the UEFA Champions League and Euro 2020 with Chelsea and Italy respectively. He is joined in the final list by fellow Chelsea stars N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount, Cesar Azpilicueta and Romelu Lukaku.
Jorginho played a vital role in the Chelsea squad last season. He was one of the team’s key players and helped the Blues achieve Champions League success. Moreover, he was one of the members of the Italian team that won the Euro 2020. He has tasted the prestigious silverware this year and played a decisive role in achieving them. It will not come as a surprise if he is voted for the prestigious award.
When asked about who he’d vote for the award at first, he joked about voting for himself rather than anyone else. That way, he’d end up ‘at least’ one vote. Jokes aside, he has chosen Kevin de Bruyne due to the Belgian’s consistent performance and intelligence in the game.
‘I believe I’d vote for Kevin de Bruyne for everything he’s been doing and for the beautiful football he’s been showing in recent years. For those who like football, it’s great to see him play because he understands football; he is a player with above-average intelligence.”
The Italian faces de Bruyne regularly in the Premier League and has a good idea of the Belgian’s abilities. Both faced off against each other in last season’s UEFA Champions League final, where both of them showed their natural game. Jorginho tasted success that night, beating Pep Guardiola’s team. But the ex Napoli player was overwhelmed by de Bruyne’s performance through the last few seasons.
It’d be difficult for Kevin de Bruyne to win this year’s top individual award despite Jorginho’s vote. PSG’s Lionel Messi, Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho himself are way ahead of the race from the rest due to their superb performances and achievements.

On current form, one could argue that former Chelsea star Mohamed Salah is the best player in the world. At the very least by voting for De Bruyne, Jorginho has ensured that the Egyptian is denied one vote.
