Chelsea handed a major boost in their pursuit of Bayern ace Niklas Sule
According to AbendZeitung (h/t Football London), Chelsea could find themselves in a promising position to land Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule next summer.
The 26-year-old defender has already mentioned that he is in no hurry to sign a new contract. His current deal with the Bavarians expires in 2022. While he could yet renew his contract, there is a palpable unease in the Bayern ranks. An understandable reaction given that Sule hasn’t committed anything on paper to the club as yet.
The German centre-back has been a dependable option for Bayern Munich in the last few years. A difficult player to go up against, it is easy to see why he is amongst the best in the Bundesliga.
Chelsea could certainly do with another central defender in their squad. Thiago Silva’s deal with the Blues expires at the end of the season. The Brazilian defender has played an instrumental part in Thomas Tuchel’s success at Stamford Bridge but at 37, he is unlikely to be a long term option.
The club has already parted ways with Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma. Andreas Christensen is at best a third choice defender. Antonio Rudiger is in the final year of his contract and has reached an impasse with Chelsea over contract negotiations. The London-based team would therefore be looking to add another defender in their ranks should they be caught out, come next summer.
Thomas Tuchel has had a great impact ever since his arrival at Stamford Bridge. He won the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup after he made the switch to Chelsea. Sule could be a great addition to Tuchel’s squad and could become a key player in the years to come.
It is not every day that a player of Sule’s capability will become available on the Bosman market. The Blues should do all they can to ensure they are at the front of the line, should he be open to a move in 2022.
