Speaking in an interview with GE Globo via Sport Witness, as tweeted by AbsoluteChelsea (h/t football.london), Chelsea defender Thiago Silva addressed talks about his retirement from football.
37 is an age where most footballers hang up their boots and look for other career options. But for a certain Thiago Silva, he has been busy leading Chelsea’s charge for silverware on multiple fronts ever since his transfer from PSG.
The Brazilian defender is a leader at the back for Chelsea and his free transfer from Paris last year has proven to be one of the most astute pieces of business conducted by the Blues.
In his first season with Chelsea, Thiago Silva was a regular presence in Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel’s defence as he guided the Blues to their second UEFA Champions League title.
Following an impressive season, the former AC Milan star was offered a one-year extension on his current Chelsea deal which expires next summer. And that may well be the time the defender hangs up his boots.
If it was up to him, however, he would have wanted to play forever. But Silva has hinted that retirement from football is not too far away.
“I wish I could play forever, man. But we can’t, right? I came to understand that food was my fuel. And it’s no use using adulterated gasoline because the car won’t work.”
Chelsea sold Kurt Zouma, Marc Guehi, and Fikayo Tomori this summer while Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are nearing the end of their current Chelsea deal. Add Silva’s potential departure next summer and Tuchel may well need to start planning for the future when it comes to his team’s backline.
