Speaking in an interview with TV3 Sport (h/t Daily Express), Chelsea centre-back Andreas Christensen said that he is happy at the club and that ‘it looks good’ with regards to his future at the club.
The 25-year-old Danish international has hinted that he can stay at the Blues beyond next summer as his contract nears its expiry.
“It’s hard to say how things will end up. There is a lot of talk. I will not say too much, but I think it looks good. I am happy to be at Chelsea.”
His contract situation comes at a crucial time for the Blues as things do not look particularly well for their backline. Christensen, along with Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger, will see their respective contracts expiring in the summer of 2022.
Things look particularly precarious for Rudiger. The German centre-back has been linked with a number of big European clubs.
Rudiger’s contract expires next summer and clubs like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have apparently offered the German a £400,000-a-week wage packet ahead of a potential pre-contract agreement in January.
In such a situation, a seemingly positive statement from Christensen comes as a bit of relief for the West London side who already lost Marc Guehi, Kurt Zouma, and Fikayo Tomori this summer.
Additionally, the Danish international is important for Thomas Tuchel’s future plans. The German boss has admitted in the past that the 25-year old is pivotal to his schemes going forward.
Christensen has been a Chelsea youth academy player moving up the ranks in 2013 before going to Borussia Monchengladbach on loan in the 2015-16 season. He returned to Stamford Bridge in 2017 and has been a regular player since.
The Dane played a big role for the club last season and was instrumental in their win over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League final as he came on for an injured Thiago Silva.
A new contract is something that he arguably deserves for his rapid rise at the club and given Thiago Silva’s age and the triple departure this summer of centre-backs, tying down Christensen to a long-term deal becomes something of a necessity for the club.
