Vengeful Chelsea face Juventus in UCL

Tuchel’s Chelsea have no time to lick on the wounds of their first Premier League defeat this season as they make a quick turn to the Champions League and a strong test of their ambitions against Juventus. The will be keen on this one as Chelsea looks to bounce back.

The defending European champions took a bad beat over the weekend against EPL title-holders Manchester City. It was not just a battle at the top of the league but also another instalment of a riveting tactical war between two of the world’s most gifted coaches in the subject. Pep Guardiola was looking forward to his first-ever win against his German counterpart and his team clearly showed pedigree in its delivery. It was a 1-0 affair, nothing too fancy, but the tactical minds were racing and noticed that Tuchel’s three-man midfield experiment did not pay the sort of dividends expected.

Does the German tactician try again against a team not coached by Guardiola? Or was that a one-time move specifically tailored to a Man City side?

Going by what the German has shown so far, expect Chelsea to revert to their usual two-man holding midfield with solidity on the wings. Reece James came off injured in that City loss, and should mean another start for experienced Brazilian CB Thiago Silva.

Chelsea’s midfield has looked great so far, and have been supplying a lot of the solutions for Tuchel. It is also the area of the pitch with the most options, with Havertz, Ziyech, and Mount providing creativity, while Kante,Jorginho, and Kovacic, anchor the line. With Mount nursing a knock, it would be interesting to see Tuchel’s choice here.

The real conundrum lives in the attack line of the Blues. Lukaku is still to find his deadly touch in front of goal, and Timo Werner is looking more out of favour with each passing day. Tuchel may try for the two-man attack again to give himself and his forwards as much confidence and options as possible, or just go with the obvious choice of Lukaku who knows Juventus very well, having just ended their Scudetto hold last season. Chelsea’s best chances this season have come when the lone striker is paired with a more creative mind in the form of Havertz, and why not Ziyech?

Whatever the decisions of the Chelsea boss, the London team will be looking to quickly recover its wits and put the first defeat of the season out of mind. The Blues have big ambitions this season and Pep’s intrusion can be considered a draw of first blood daughter than any sort of telltale. Their opponent, Juventus, have not looked their usual dominant self this season, and losing Paulo Dybala over the weekend was a big blow to their hopes. Even worse, the Italkan side will have to also deal with the absence of former Chelsea man, Alvaro Morata. All that means is that the Italians will play spirited, scrappy, and count on a usual Italian display of lock down defense.

Chelsea will have to be at its best.
