Speaking in the pre-match press conference ahead of the Aston Villa game (h/t The Metro), Thomas Tuchel has hinted that Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner can play together for Chelsea.
The Blues are currently sitting joint-top of the table alongside Liverpool and Manchester United and they have won 4 games out of a possible 5 in the Premier League.
However, what has not happened in any of those games is Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner playing together. The former was signed by the club earlier this season in a club-record deal worth £97.5million and has started every single game since Match Week 2 against Arsenal.
Werner, in turn, featured for the club during the UEFA Super Cup final and in the season opener against Crystal Palace. Although the pair have not started together yet, there have been instances of them playing together when Werner has come off the bench in the dying embers of games.
However, the pair got nearly half an hour together on the weekend against Tottenham and did link up a couple of times. Tuchel has now used this reference to point that out the duo can play together.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Cup game against Aston Villa (h/t The Metro), he said:
“He (Werner) gave us a clear impression of how dangerous he and Romelu can be together.”
Tuchel also provided an explanation of why Werner has featured rarely so far but also believed that it could soon change.
“There was some disappointment from the Euros and the first games where I don’t think he was happy with his performances.
“The stuff that you don’t see, he is more relaxed, more fluid in his movements, and that is why he came on early against Tottenham. There are clear signs he is in a good way.”
Thus, it is a good sign that Tuchel believes in the fact that the pair can work together, and neither would have to be sacrificed for the other. However, it remains to be seen how often the German boss fields them together this season and if we can see that happen in the game tonight against Aston Villa in the EFL Cup.
