Speaking to reporters at the Giacinto Facchetti awards (h/t The Sun), Former Chelsea player and Dutch legend Ruud Guilt has tipped N’Golo Kante to win the Ballon d’Or this year.
The Ballon d’Or award, which has been dominated by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the last decade, was not awarded last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, that will not be the case this year, and there is a certain optimism on who will lift the prestigious accolade. Former Chelsea player Ruud Guilt believes the award should be given to somebody besides goal-scorers and has mentioned N’Golo Kante as one of the prospects.
He told the reporters at the Giacinto Facchetti awards (h/t The Sun):
“Those who score attract more and more attention. It would be nice to see someone who attracts less attention for goals, like Kante, who deserves to win.”
Kante has been incredible for the Blues since he joined the West London club back in 2016. Although he has always been good at his job, the 30-year-old’s performances have notched up a level since Thomas Tuchel arrived at the London outfit a little over 6 months ago.
The French international was sensational in the Stamford Bridge outfit’s UEFA Champions League triumph and was also named the man of the match in the final against Manchester City. This also led to the former Leicester man winning the UEFA Champions League midfielder of the 2020/21 season award.
Although he has had one or two injuries this season, the midfielder was on call to produce another brilliant performance last weekend when he scored an important goal in the London derby against Tottenham.
While Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Jorginho are said to be above Kante in the pecking order for the Ballon d’Or, it remains to be seen which individual picks up the accolade this year.
