Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku scored two wonderful goals against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge to hand his team a vital 3-0 home win. It has been a good few weeks for the Belgian striker ever since he joined the club.
The £97.5million fee he signed for is no small amount, but the former Inter Milan hitman is making a great impression so far. He netted on his second Blues debut against Arsenal in what was a dominating performance against the North Londoners.
A tough time against Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk followed when the Blues visited Anfield, but much of that can be attributed to Reece James’ first-half red card. And now, Lukaku has gotten himself amongst the goals again.
The ex-Everton and Manchester United marksman opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a clever fake shot and finish. He followed it up with a rasping shot into the top corner just before the full-time whistle.
This was Lukaku’s first match at Stamford Bridge as a Chelsea player ever since he departed the club for Everton in 2014. And the Belgian international, speaking to Sky Sports (h/t football.london) after the game, described his return as a ‘childhood dream’.
“Yeah it was good, childhood dream for me, very happy to be in this situation I’m in but the hard work continues. They were really good, pressing us from the front, they made life difficult but we stayed focused.”
It isn’t like Lukaku to hog the credit for himself. Chelsea’s defence was sublime throughout the game and the striker made sure to shed a light on their efforts after the full-time whistle.
“Edou (Mendy) did really well and the three central defenders and wing-backs did really well and then up front we were just clinical with the chance we had.”
Chelsea are now joint-top of the Premier League table with Man United with 10 points from 4 games. Up next in the league for them is a hair-raising London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on 19th September.
