Speaking to the club’s official website (h/t Daily Star), Chelsea ace Kepa Arrizabalaga has opened up on his relationship with Edouard Mendy. Despite losing out his place to the latter, Kepa insisted that they maintain a good rapport with each other.
Not too long ago many thought Kepa was going to carry the mantle of the gloves at Chelsea for the foreseeable future. After all, he had impressed quite the bit at Athletic Bilbao. It was anything but. A string of high-profile errors over the first few seasons meant that Chelsea were dropping points.
Eventually, Chelsea went after Edouard Mendy when Frank Lampard was in charge. Over the last season, Mendy went on to oust Kepa as the number one on the side. His assured showings meant that Kepa hardly got the one-off games. However, Kepa has managed to make some important appearances this season, most notably in the Super Cup.
The 26-year-old Spaniard also came back to the XI over the weekend and his crucial saves kept Chelsea on the front foot. After that game, the Spaniard spoke about his relationship with Mendy.
“Edou and I have a very good relationship. We are training together every day and support each other whoever is playing. You could see in the Super Cup the relationship we have. He was one of the first players to congratulate me after the penalty shoot-out and of course we celebrated together. Hopefully he can return to training soon from his injury.”
With Mendy injured, for the time being, Kepa could see some minutes coming his way in the next few games. Ha kept his head up through the whole situation and shown that he is still a quality keeper. Kepa is making a good case for himself and it could give Tuche a good headache when Mendy return to action.
