Chelsea set to benefit after UEFA reach decision over fining Super League clubs

UEFA drop proceedings against European Super League clubs, Chelsea no longer to pay a fine

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea could be set to benefit from UEFA dropping fines on the European Super League clubs. The trio of Real Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona are going to have their proceedings against them dropped while the rest of the nine clubs including Chelsea will be exempted from paying fines.

Back in April, a proposal for the ESL was brought forward. 12 of the continent’s top clubs were set to form a new and closed league with a few other clubs. The basic principle was that those top clubs would be competing against each other in order to play more high profile games for better revenue generation.

However, with backlash from almost all the fronts, the idea was shelved as nine of the 12 clubs backed out. Only the trio of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus stayed firm on their position as UEFA opened proceedings on them and fined the other clubs. Now, a court in Madrid has ruled that UEFA cannot keep up the disciplinary actions on the trio.

UEFA are now having to comply with the same and agreed to drop those proceedings against the clubs. The governing body also reached out to the other clubs including Chelsea over the exemption of fines. The clubs were set to pay a combined £22m for various football development programs as a fine.

While all is calm on the scenario regarding the ESL, it was a rather limp effort from UEFA when it came to punishing the clubs over this whole thing. Now, with all the proceedings and fines set to be dropped, it goes back to square one.

Only time will tell if the ESL ever gets to see the light of the day. But for the regular football fan, they’d be hoping that the clubs at least learnt a lesson from this whole saga.
