“Don’t know why”- Tuchel gives honest verdict on Chelsea’s narrow UCL defeat vs Juventus

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel gives his verdict on UEFA Champions League loss vs Juventus

Speaking after the Champions League game on Wednesday night (/h/t The Guardian), Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was rather puzzled as to why his side was not mentally sharp in the loss to Juventus. The German manager was rather livid with Chelsea for not capitalising on their chances and succumbing to a 1-0 loss.

That is two losses for Chelsea in two games. While that should not be the cause to sound any alarm bells, it should raise some concerns. Manchester City were top-notch against Chelsea but Juventus were not. Chelsea had all the chances they needed to down the Italian side but they managed to fluff them rather badly.

Juventus defended well on most occasions but Chelsea simply lacked any sort of incision and almost never looked like disturbing the net. Chiesa’s goal was simply well taken as it caught the defence off guard. That was the only goal of the game which decided the result and now Juventus are leading the group as Chelsea play catch up.

A rather uncharacteristic performance from the Blues, and Thomas Tuchel was not quite happy with the same. He spoke about the lack of sharpness from the side and how Juve could have punished them for their lapses.

“We were so good in training yesterday and not good enough, not free enough today. I don’t know why. It was a thing for the whole team. I felt we were a bit slow and tired, mentally slow for decision making. It’s a strange one to analyse.”

The loss was not much damaging as Chelsea still have four more games in the group and are still well in contention for qualification. However, the need to bounce back should be on their minds as these losses are a slippery slope and can hamper morale. Next up is Southampton for Chelsea in the Premier League.
