According to Football.london, Chelsea have been charged by the FA for player conduct against Liverpool. The Blues players confronted referee Anthony Taylor twice after the Reece James handball incident that led to a red card and subsequent penalty.
Chelsea and Liverpool played out one of the classics of the season so far in their 1-1 draw over the weekend. Kai Havertz opened the scoring for Chelsea. But an unfortunate handball close to halftime meant that Mohamed Salah equalised via a penalty. Both teams headed into halftime with the score at 1-1.
However, neither side could get the upper hand in the second half. Chelsea have Edouard Mendy to thank who kept out several efforts as Liverpool tried to take advantage of ten-man Chelsea. It was the handball incident that dominated headlines. Both sets of players were involved in a faceoff after Salah converted the penalty.
After the halftime whistle, Chelsea players again confronted Anthony Taylor for his decision. The Blues have now been charged by the FA for the conduct of the players during the two instances. The FA have asked them to respond to that. Here is the statement.
“Chelsea FC has been charged with two breaches of FA Rule E20.1 following their Premier League fixture against Liverpool FC on Saturday [28/08/21]. It is alleged that Chelsea FC failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 48th minute of the first half and following the half-time whistle. Chelsea FC has until Friday [03/09/21] to provide a response to this charge.”
The sending off and the penalty were surely controversial decisions that changed the dynamics of the match. Chelsea had to play on the back foot for most of the second half. Nonetheless, confronting the referee for his decision does go against the rules.
