Speaking to Football Italia (h/t Daily Mail), Former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte explained how the Blues have not yet churned out the best from summer signing Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgian arrived at the West London outfit for a club-record deal worth £98million last month and has gone on to feature in every game for the club since facing Arsenal on Matchday 2 of the Premier League.
While the 28-year-old has scored 4 goals for the Stamford Bridge outfit so far, he has failed to find the back of the net in his last four games, including against Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday. The Old Lady took the lead just seconds into the second half, and the Blues failed to create enough clear-cut chances for their star man upfront.
Former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, who also coached Lukaku at Inter Milan for the last two years, believes that the Blues have not exploited the Belgian’s talent yet. Conte told Football Italia (h/t Daily Mail):
‘During the game, there are moments when Lukaku needs to be turned on, but other than that he is one of the toughest forwards to play against because he can do damage in any area of the pitch.
‘If you have a centre-forward like that, you need to use him, and I don’t think Chelsea have quite figured out how to use him yet. If they can figure out how to use Lukaku, then Chelsea can become the team to beat in the Champions League this season.’
The Blues have splurged in the transfer market this summer as they hope to retain their Champions League trophy as well as compete for the Premier League trophy.
The 28-year-old centre-forward will be a key part of both these competitions and will now be aiming to find the back of the net against Southampton on the weekend.
