According to a transfer news update from The Sun’s Tom Barclay, Chelsea have inserted a £40m buyback clause as part of the deal that saw academy prospect Tino Livramento sign for Southampton.
The young full-back was tipped as one of the brightest prospects coming through at Cobham. However, after rejecting a contract offer earlier this summer, Livramento completed a transfer to Southampton on Monday evening.
The club confirmed the departure of the 18-year-old prodigy on the official website, with a statement that read:
“Academy defender Tino Livramento has today completed a permanent move to Southampton. We would like to thank Tino for his efforts and wish him well for the future.”
And, Barclay has now shed some light on the transfer deal, claiming that Southampton will be paying £5m to sign the defender. The journalist also goes on to reveal that Chelsea have inserted a buyback option worth £40m for the future, which only goes on to indicate how highly the Blues rated the 18-year-old.
Livramento becomes the latest of the string of academy players leaving Chelsea this summer. Marc Guehi signed for Crystal Palace after returning from loan while Myles Peart-Harris left for Brentford. Dynel Simeu made his way to Southampton last month, with Livramento now following in his footsteps to the St. Mary’s.
Midfielders Conor Gallagher and Billy Gilmour have also left for Crystal Palace and Norwich City, albeit on season-long loan deals.
Livramento could have found a spot in the first-team at Chelsea sooner rather than later considering that Reece James does not have a viable backup apart from the ageing Cesar Azpilicueta. However, the talented teenager has chosen to continue his development with the Saints.
