According to the Express, Chelsea have agreed to personal terms with Erling Haaland and remain in the fray for his signature despite Borussia Dortmund’s stand.
The Blues went big on Timo Werner last summer but the German has failed to live up to expectations. While his numbers are not as catastrophic as sometimes relayed, he has largely been more of a miss than a hit.
Olivier Giroud has already left the club while Tammy Abraham looks set to follow suit. This will leave the Blues with Werner as their lone senior striker going into the 2021/22 campaign. While the likes of Christian Pulisic and Kai Havertz could do a job upfront if needed, we are better off bringing in a specialist striker who knows the way to the back of the net.
Dortmund have already sold Jadon Sancho and do not appear to be willing to also lose Haaland this summer. While the player is also actively playing it cool, the report goes on to state that a deal could still be made possible.
It is no secret that the Blues are in for a striker and have earmarked Haaland as their priority target. Chelsea have had a rather quiet summer that has been dominated by outgoings. Fikayo Tomori, Victor Moses, and Olivier Giroud have all been sold bringing in money that could be re-invested.
Youngster Tino Livramento is also set to leave, netting the Blues £5m. Whether Chelsea are readying themselves to make a blockbuster bid for Haaland remains to be seen.
The Blues are actively working on a deal and are aware that is is far from easy to get it over the line. However, given the financial difficulties, a number of top sides are having, they know the time is ripe if they are seeking to take advantage.
Chelsea are not short of money following some astute transfer business and also having won last season’s UEFA Champions League. Whether the cheque book will be opened up to sanction the purchase of one of the world’s best young talents remains to be seen.
Haaland is not the only striker on Chelsea’s radar. Former ace Romelu Lukaku is also being monitored, although he has no interest in a return. With the new season a little under a fortnight away, it remains to be seen who we bring in.
