“A long journey”- Romelu Lukaku speaks for the first time since re-joining Chelsea in £97.5m move

Romelu Lukaku speaks for the first time since rejoining Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku has finally returned to Chelsea in a much-awaited move worth £97.5million. The Belgian striker repeated his move to the Blues after almost a decade since he first joined the club. While things were all good at Inter Milan, Lukaku felt that he needed to settle the score at Chelsea.

Chelsea needed a striker after what happened last season. They might have won the Champions League but a lot of the credit has to go to the defensive resilience under Thomas Tuchel. Timo Werner was not regularly amongst the goals while the likes of Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud weren’t regular starters.

Hence, Chelsea seemingly went all out in their pursuit of Romelu Lukaku. And the ex-Anderlecht man is a changed striker since he left Stamford Bridge in 2014 for Everton. During that time, he has honed his craft in England and Italy to become one of the most deadly strikers on the continent. Last season, he spearheaded Inter’s charge to the Serie A title.

Chelsea wasted no time in getting him back in a deal worth £97.5million. The Belgian international put pen to paper on a five-year deal and then finally spoke for the first time as a new Chelsea player (h/t Express).

“It’s been a long journey for me: I came here as a kid who had a lot to learn, now I’m coming back with a lot of experience and more mature. The relationship I have with this club means so much to me, as you know. I have supported Chelsea as a kid and now to be back and try to help them win more titles is an amazing feeling.

“The way the club is going fits my ambitions perfectly at 28 and just coming off winning Serie A. I think this opportunity comes at the right time and hopefully we can have a lot of success together. Since I left Chelsea, it’s been a long journey with a lot of ups and downs, but these experiences made me strong and the challenge is to try to help the team win some more trophies. I can’t wait to get started and to help the club achieve more success.”

Lukaku joins the Blues at a pivotal point. The Blues are fresh off a Champions League-winning campaign and recently won the UEFA Super Cup against Villarreal. The addition of Lukaku has the potential to push Chelsea to further success. And both Tuchel and Lukaku will be hoping that it’s the second time lucky.
