According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea purchasing Romelu Lukaku has strengthened Inter Milan’s resolve to keep Tottenham Hotspur target, Lautaro Martinez.
The Inter duo looked set to be headed to London with the Blues already agreeing a £97.5million for the Belgian hitman. And a report by The Times (Subscription Required) revealed that Spurs agreed on a fee for Martinez.
But Romano’s tweet clarified that while discussions took place between the Argentine and Chelsea’s city rivals, I Nerazzurri now want to keep Martinez after seeing the 28-year-old Lukaku head for Chelsea.
“Tottenham opened talks days ago for Lautaro Martinez offering €70m, also Atletico asked for Lautaro. He’s a real target for Spurs – Inter now say they’ve no intention to sell him this summer. #THFC After selling Lukaku to Chelsea, Inter plan is to keep Lautaro Martinez.”
Spurs’ Harry Kane saga seems never-ending and perhaps the footballing world will know of his footballing future for sure only by the end of deadline day.
And as they scrap to solve their striker situation upfront, Chelsea fans would be on cloud nine seeing their club sign a potent goal-scorer in Lukaku and also inadvertently spoiling transfer plans of their bitter London rivals.
Chelsea have already seen Olivier Giroud leave their ranks for AC Milan and Tammy Abraham could well be on his way to Serie A in a €40million move, as revealed by Romano.
In light of that, the Blues have done smart business this summer. An expensive signing in Lukaku could be partially balanced by multiple outgoings such as that of Marc Guehi, Fikayo Tomori, Giroud and the likes.
