According to Corriere dello Sport (h//t Daily Mail), AS Roma have made contact with Chelsea over a potential deal for Ruben Loftus-Cheek. They are actually trying hard to get a deal over the line within the remaining week of the transfer window. Chelsea are open to letting him leave if a suitable offer is sent.
The 25-year-old was once regarded as the next biggest thing to come out of the Chelsea youth academy. However, he has had his progress derailed by injuries and erratic form. Loftus-Cheek has gone out on two separate loan spells to Crystal Palace, while he spent the last term at Fulham but has not found a lot of success during that time.
Even at Chelsea, he has had a mixed spell so far. He has impressed in patches but on the large, it has been underwhelming at best. With midfielders like Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante, there’s hardly a chance for Loftus-Cheek to break in. Hence, Chelsea are open to the idea of letting him leave.
It seems Roma would again come to the rescue after signing Tammy Abraham. Jose Mourinho could be reunited with Loftus-Cheek again as Roma have opened talks over a potential deal. Transfer chief Tiago Pinto is said to be working hard on the move and to get it done on time ahead of the deadline next week.
It makes good sense to let go of the midfielder as he is not really in the first-team plans. The squad is still too big to manage and offloading more fringe players can possibly help land another signing in the remaining few days.
