“It’s on him”: Tuchel lays down the gauntlet for underperforming star as Chelsea eye blockbuster transfer

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel challenges Timo Werner to show his abilities amidst summer striker hunt

According to the Mirror, Thomas Tuchel has challenged misfiring Chelsea star Timo Werner to step up and make himself counted.

The German was a high profile signing last summer and arrived at the Bridge to much anticipation. While a return of 12 2 goals and 15 assists in 52 games is nothing to sneeze at, he has largely been found wanting and has missed opportunities to rack up the numbers.

A prolific scorer with RB Leipzig, he has dropped a rung in his performances and it remains to be seen if he will be the club’s ace striker going forward. Chelsea have already sold Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham could follow suit. With Erling Haaland and Romelu Lukaku on our radar, Werner has to do his talking on the field.

The German assisted his international compatriot Kai Havertz in Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Arsenal at the weekend. While one can find little fault in the player’s movement since last season and effort, the end product is found lacking. Tuchel confirmed after the game that little has changed for the striker.

“Nothing has changed so far. He had a so-so Euros with Germany, but that was a concern of the whole team not his personal problem.”

The Chelsea boss believes the onus is no on Werner to show his worth to the team. Whether it was a challenge or an ultimatum of sorts remains to be seen. With the pre-season just having started, Werner has around two weeks to get himself into top gear. Whether he will turn a corner regarding his performances remains to be seen.

“Now it’s on him. Like always it’s on him to show his quality and his ability.”

Is Tuchel losing patience? (Mark Pain)

Perhaps curiously, Abraham who could be on his way out found the net against the Gunners. Werner has now been at the club for a year and should be starting to up his game now. Chelsea are not a club known for their patience and sooner or later something has got to give.

Offloading him hastily might not be the best move on Chelsea’s part. The German international did show some positives under Tuchel and has continued to rack up assists. It could be a matter of him needing one special performance to regain his mojo.
