According to Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness (h/t football.london), Chelsea still stand a chance to sign Saul Niguez this summer but are yet to make an offer for the Spanish international.
The Blues have been in the market for a midfielder as they are seemingly short of options in that area. Thomas Tuchel, who is currently operating with only 3 central midfielders in N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, and Jorginho, could need more players to provide sufficient cover and back-up. Kante, who has already incurred fitness issues this season, left Tuchel with only 2 options for their season opener against Crystal Palace.
Additionally, the club have also sent Billy Gilmour out on loan to Norwich this season, leaving a vacant spot in the midfield. While Mason Mount could play in that role, Tuchel might use the Englishman’s abilities upfront rather than in the centre of the pitch.
Thus, a player like Saul Niguez could challenge for starts while also providing sufficient cover if he makes the bench. The Spaniard is a silky player on the ball, and his ability to play in midfield has been well-known around Europe for a few years now.
The midfielder made 33 La Liga appearances for Atletico Madrid last season and scored 2 goals and provided an assist as he helped Atletico win the league. However, the player has since made it clear that he wants to leave the Spanish outfit.
Although Chelsea are interested in signing the player this summer, they will face stiff competition from rivals Liverpool and Manchester United. Although none of the clubs have registered a formal bid with the Spanish club, the Blues will have to move fast if they hope to sign the player as there are less than three weeks before the summer transfer window shuts.
Chelsea are reportedly still interested in Brazil's 20-year-old defender Lucas Beraldo, who joined PSG this summer.
