According to Daily Mail, five Chelsea players have been nominated for Champions League awards. The Blues have the most number of nominations for these best in the position awards from last season. They are followed by Manchester City with three nominations and the rest of the four names are from different clubs.
Chelsea ended their wait for a second ever Champions League crown last season when they beat Manchester City in the final in Porto. Kai Havertz was the hero as his goal was the difference maker with City struggling to break Chelsea’s resolve. Within just four months, Thomas Tuchel had guided the club to euphoria.
Hence, it was no surprise to see a host of Chelsea players being nominated for the positional awards. No other club has so many nominations but that was somewhat expected after the Blues won the competition. For the best goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy will be up against Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid and Ederson of Man City (h/t Daily Mail).
There are two nominees in defence as captain Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger are joined by Ruben Dias from Man City. Further ahead in midfield, the ever-energetic N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are accompanied by Kevin De Bruyne. In terms of forwards, Chelsea have no nominations given the goalscoring issues last season. Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe have been nominated for that position (h/t Daily Mail).
The winners of the draw will be revealed on the 26th of August along with the Champions League Group stage draw. Chelsea might have been underdogs last season in the competition but they go in this season as a genuine contender. Thomas Tuchel will be hoping that he can push the Blues as far as he can in the competition.
