Although the writing was on the wall, Chelsea showed their superiority against Arsenal on Sunday in the London derby as the Blues romped to victory, thanks to 2 goals in the first half.
The West London club’s record-breaking signing of Romelu Lukaku paid off, and the Belgian showcased it in the first game itself.
Although it took a while before he got a hold of the ball, the Belgian certainly looked the part 15 minutes into the game as he rolled off Pablo Mari, laid the ball off for Mason Mount. The Englishman, in turn, found Reece James, who squared the ball delightfully to Lukaku, who was not going to miss an open goal.
The Belgian has made it a point to score on his debut at every club he has signed for, and he continued the tradition on Sunday when the Blues needed him the most. Although the Gunners pressed after the first goal, Chelsea’s midfield pivot of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic were incredible on the day.
The second goal came soon as well when Marcos Alonso and Kai Havertz exchanged a couple of passes, and the ball eventually reached the feet of Reece James, who slashed the ball in. It was two worthy goals, and Chelsea sat on it the entire game. Tuchel’s back three absorbed the pressure when it had to while it also showed resilience in the crucial moments.
N’Golo Kante and Hakim Ziyech, who missed the club’s season opener, also got a few minutes under their belt, as the Blues wrapped up an incredible performance at the Emirates. The victory took Chelsea to sit joint top of the table alongside Liverpool, who they will now face next Saturday.
