UEFA, on Thursday, released the nominations for their Men’s Player of the Year awards as they named Chelsea duo N’Golo Kante and Jorginho alongside Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne in their three-man shortlist. Fans of Chelsea and Manchester City have been delighted with these nominations and were more or less expecting this, especially after the two clubs reached the Champions League final.
While N’Golo Kante won the Champions League final and the UEFA Super Cup final with Chelsea, Jorginho partnered the Frenchman in those exploits but the 29-year-old also ended up winning the European Championship with Italy this summer.
Kevin de Bruyne, on the other hand, helped Manchester City reach their first-ever Champions League final after he inspired a come-back in the 1st leg of their semi-final against PSG, while he was also instrumental in the 2nd leg. De Bruyne, however, had to be substituted in the final after he suffered a black eye due to a collision with Antonio Rudiger. The Belgian ended the season with three goals and four assists in 8 Champions League appearances.
However, the three have been deservedly nominated and it is a nice change of pace given that all three players are midfielders and not forwards, who have dominated these awards in previous years, with Robert Lewandowski picking up the award last year.
Thomas Tuchel is also shortlisted alongside Pep Guardiola and Roberto Mancini for the Men’s Coach of the Year Award while Emma Hayes has also made the cut for the final three in the Women’s Coach of the Year category.
Here is how Chelsea fans reacted to the trio being nominated for the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award.
